313th Troop Carrier Group, 48th Troop Carrier Squadron. He flew C-46's and C-47's. He took part in the Normandy landings piloting C-47 (S/N: 43-15176).

On Mar. 24, 1945, he took part in Operation Varsity, a successful joint American–British airborne operation that took place toward the end of World War II, involving more than 16,000 paratroopers and several thousand aircraft. His plane was S/N: 44-77645 Radio call sign V. It was destroyed by flak. It made the run in with both gas tanks on fire; the aircraft exploded when it struck the ground.
