The plane cart-wheeled, caught fire and Trombley was badly burned. He was a P.O.W. for 7 months. (MACR #9603).

While in Stalag XIII-D, Nürnberg, fellow classmate Vibbert was brought in as prisoner. Vibbert was also badly burned. Vibbert in order to buck up Trombley, dubbed Ray “Prune Face” and himself “The Brow” – from the comic strip characters in Dick Tracy. One of their friends in the prison camp wrote, "Whenever Ray sank into a funk, Harry would say, “Come on 'Prune Face,’ I’m ‘The Brow,’ and I’m the boss,” and Ray would buck up. It was beautiful to watch what those two men did for each other. One giving – one receiving – both gaining. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever."
